Basic Drawing – Introduction

Welcome to Basic Drawing, drawing for the first time with Ronald Paredes.

I created this course assuming that you have never held a pencil to make a drawing, and although it is something you probably always wanted to do there has always been something preventing you from trying.

I can tell without any shadow of a doubt that the main reason is a lack of confidence.

My intention with this course is not only to provide you with the technical aspects of drawing but most importantly to help you get rid of those inhibitions, developing the confidence to start making your first sketches and creating the habit of drawing creatively.

Basic Drawing – Lesson 1

Get familiar with some of the most common materials used for drawing from the paper to drawing tools, from the average pencil to charcoal and brush.

We also talk about how to hold the pencil and how to place and move the hand over the surface of the paper for a more comfortable end effective drawing experience.

BAsic Drawing – Lesson 2

In this lesson, we will draw a simple still life composition using the current knowledge about drawing. The intention is to asses the level of your skill at the current moment and to create a reference point to evaluate yourself against in the future as you progress with your skills.

The expected outcome of this entire course is not only to develop more and better drawing skills but to also develop the right mentality and attitude towards drawing and pretty much any other creative activity, seeing how you have progressed by comparing your drawings will have a confidence-building effect as you see how you improve with time.

You are encouraged to produce your own still life composition but in case you want to use the same image of the video this one is provided in the materials.

BAsic Drawing – Lesson 3

Drawing it’s all about learning how to control the hand so this can do what our brain wants and our eyes interpret. This seemingly boring and unimportant set of exercises is the cornerstone to start developing the control required to dominate the skill of drawing.

By consistently exercising drawing circles, zigzag lines, spirals, lines in all directions and positions as well as a combination of shapes we will build the muscle memory that will allow us to make all the appropriate movements to be able to draw correctly.

The most important ability required to draw well is to learn how to observe and interpret the objects you want to draw and one of the most effective way to do this is by learning how to create a structure for your drawing using the same proportions and sizes given by the objects you are observing.

In this lesson, we use as an example a simple still life that will be structured by using rectangles extracted from the sizes and proportions of the same objects in the composition. This will help to decide how much of the space in the paper the drawing will take and also to maintain the proportions between the objects in the composition.

Everybody is familiar with the image of the arrogant looking artist, extending his arm in front of his face, with an eye closed holding a pencil or a brush.

This technique is the most basic to measure our drawing and fit the composition in our paper by using our hand and a pencil, brush or stick to get the proportions right and how all the objects in the drawing interact with each other.
